The Heart and Blood Vessels (open and closed blood systems) Flashcards
How many types of circulatory systems are there?
There are two circulatory systems
What are the two types of circulatory systems?
Open systems
Closed systems
What does an open circulatory system mean?
An open circulatory system means blood leaves blood vessels and flows around the cells of the animal’s body before re-entering blood vessels again
What type of circulatory system means blood leaves blood vessels and flows around the cells of the animal’s body before re-entering blood vessels again?`
An open circulatory system
What are some examples of animals with open circulatory systems?
Crabs Lobsters Insects Spiders Snails Slugs
What type of circulatory systems do crabs and lobsters have?
An open circulatory system
What does a closed circulatory system mean?
A closed circulatory system means blood remains in a continuous system of blood vessels
What type of circulatory system means blood remains in a continuous system of blood vessels?
A closed circulatory system
In a closed circulatory system how are materials exchanged between the blood and cells?
Materials are exchanged between the blood and cells through the thin walls of the smallest blood vessels
What is an example of an organism with a closed circulatory system?
Humans
What type of circulatory system do humans have?
A closed circulatory system
Which type of circulatory system is more efficient?
A closed system
Why is a closed circulatory system more efficient than an open circulatory system?
(2)
Animals can have a higher metabolic rate
The flow of blood can be increased or decreased
How does a closed circulatory system allow an animal to have a higher metabolic rate than those with an open circulatory system?
(3)
Blood can be pumped around the body faster
This allows nutrients and oxygen to be distributed faster to the cells
This is turn allows the animal to be more active i.e. have a higher metabolic rate
How does the closed circulatory system’s ability to increase or decrease blood flow make it a more efficient system than the open circulatory system?
(3)
A closed system allows the flow of blood to different organs to be increased or decreased
For example, more blood can be supplied to the leg muscles when the animal is running
This can be put to use by hunting predators or fleeing prey
