Cell Structure (Cell Membrane) Flashcards
What are cell membranes composed of?
Phospholipids and proteins
What are the two groups found in phospholipids called?
A water-loving phosphate groups and a water-hating lipid group
How are the two groups found in phospholipids arranged?
They arranged into double layers or bilayers
In the phospholipid bilayer, where are the phosphates found?
On the exposed outer surfaces
In the phospholipid bilayer, where are the lipids found?
In the middle
Where are the proteins found in a membrane?
They are either completely or partially embedded in the phospholipid bilayer
What are the functions of membranes?
Retain the cell contents
Recognise molecules that touch them
Control what enter and leaves the cell
Give support to the cell
How do membranes control what enters and leaves the cells?
They allow the free passage of some molecules and prevent the passage of others
