What is bile formed from?
It is formed from the remains of damaged red blood cells
Describe the appearance of bile
It is a yellow-green viscous liquid
What does bile consist of?
water, bile salts and bile pigments (doesn’t contain any enzymes)
Where is bile made?
It is made in the liver
Where is bile stored?
In the gall bladder
How does bile enter the duodenum?
Through the bile duct
What are the functions of bile?
To emulsify lipids (to break down large fats and oils into tiny droplets) This increases the surface area for enzyme digestion.
To neutralise chyme from the stomach
To excrete pigments such as biliverdin and bilirubin
What does bile contain that can neutralise chyme?
sodium hydrogen carbonate, which is alkaline
