the heart Flashcards
what is the purpose of the heart
it pumps the blood through our bodies
what two arteries bring the blood to the other parts of the body
pulmonary artery and artery
what are the veins that bring blood back to the heart
pulmonary vein and inferior, superior vena cava
how is the pulmonary vein different from other veins
its is oxygen-rich, usually, veins are oxygen-poor. it is oxygen rich because it just picked up oxygen from the lungs and is bringing it back to the heart
how is the pulmonary artery different from other arteries
it is oxygen poor, usually, arteries are oxygen-rich. it is oxygen-poor because it is going to the lungs to pick up oxygen
what is diastole
filling phase of the heart
muscles are relaxed and blood is flowing in the atria
what is systole
contraction phase
pushes the blood into the ventricles
what circulation route is on the rights side
pulmonary circulation
what circulation route is on the left side
systemic circulation
where is pulmonary circulation going to
the lungs
what is pulmonary circulation rich in
co2
what is the process of pulmonary circulation
- blood exits the right ventricle and goes to the lungs through the pulmonary artery
- exchanges co2 for o2 in the capillaries in the lungs
- blood come back to the left atrium through the pulmonary vein
where is systemic circulation going to
the rest of the body
what is systemic circulation rich in
o2
what is the process of systemic circulation
- blood exits to the rest of the body through the aorta which divides into arteries that go to the capillaries all over our body
- gets rid of o2, nutrients and other substances and picks of carbon
- returns to the heart through the superior and inferior vena cava and then to the right atrium
