Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is extracellular fluid
- surrounds the cells
- contains white blood cells
- exchanges between cells happen here
What is the process of lymph circulation
1) waste goes from cells to extracellular fluid
2) goes into lymphatic system and becomes lymph
3) then goes back into the blood
What is the lymphatic system made up of
Lymphatic vessels
How does the lymph circulate in the lymphatic system
Throughout the muscle contractions and valves
What is lymph
Fluid derived from extracellular fluid
What is the purpose of the lymphatic system
Helps with the bodies defence system
Carries antibodies and white blood cells
What are lymphatic vessels
They carry lymph throughout the whole body
What are lymph nodes
Small bumps
White blood cells are created in lymph nodes
Lymph is filtered here
What does our immune system do
The defence if our body
Includes all the elements of our lymphatic system
- vessels, nodes and lymphatic organs
What are two characteristics that’s antibodies have
- they are specific, they are able to recognize the natives they are produced for
- immunizing, have a memory in how to fight off a certain antigen
What is phagocytosis
White blood cells find the antigens and destroys it
White blood cells can ingest antigens
What’s does having specific immunity mean
Human body can protect itself from a particular antigen
Some whit blood cells can provide antibodies to neutralize one type of antigen
What does obtaining immunity naturally mean
After an infection, our body’s remember the antigens that entered our body. Our body bodies remember how to create antibodies to fight the antigens off
How can u obtain specific immunity artificially
Getting a vaccine. Vaccines give white blood cells memory about the antigens of a certain disease
why does extracellular fluid seep into the lymphatic system
To be cleaned out from all the waste in the blood
