cardiovascualr system Flashcards
what does the cardiovascular system transport
blood
what are the two types of vessels in the system
oxygen-rich blood vessels
carbon dioxide-rich vessels
what are the three categories of blood vessels
capillaries
arteries
veins
what is the job of the arteries
they deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the parts of the body
why are arteries thicker than veins
cause they need to withstand more pressure because the blood coming from the heart is pumped at a high rate
what is the job of the capillaries
exchanges between blood and cells happen through the capillaries
what is the job of veins
they carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart
why do veins have valves
so the blood does not move in the wrong direction
why are the walls of the capillaries so thin
so they are permeable and the gas exchange can happen
