The Earths Structure Flashcards
Parts of earth
Inner core
Outer core
Mantle
Crust
Inner core
Made of iron and Nickel
Solid
Outer core
Iron and nickel
Molten/liquid
Mantle
Made of several layers of rock
Semi molten or molten but rigid at crust
Crust
Made of solid rocks and materials
2 zones- oceanic and continental
Oceanic vs continental crust
Oceanic is 6-10km deep where as continental is 30-60km deep
Oceanic is heavier than continental
Oceanic is make of basalt where as continental is made of granite
The minerals in oceanic are silica and magnesium (sima) but the minerals sin continental are silica and aluminium (sial)
Lithosphere
Crust and upper part of mantle, it’s solid and doesn’t flow
Asthenosphere
Region just below lithosphere, partially liquid so crust can slide on it
Internal forces changing earth
Moving magma
External forces changing earth
Denudation
Moho line
Boundary between the earths crust and mantle
