The Diversity of Cellular Life/Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
Unicellular organisms
Have one cell
Colonial organisms
Unicellular organisms that live together in a group - no relationship to each other
Multicellular organisms
A group of cells that live & work together in one organism - dependent on each other because differentiation & specialization
Advantages of specialization in multicellular organisms
Each cell only has one job so it can be more efficient at it
Disadvantages of
Cells are dependent on one another - if one cell fails to do its job the whole organism will perish
All cells have two characteristics in common
They are surrounded by a cell membrane & they contain DNA
Prokaryotic cells
Lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, also have a cell wall
Prokaryotic cells example
Bacteria
Eukaryotic cells vs prokaryotic cells
Eukaryotic cells are generally larger & more complex
Eukaryotic cells
Have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Eukaryotic cells example
Plants, animals, protists, and fungi
