The Cell Membrane Flashcards
Cell membrane function
Regulates what enters and what leaves the cell - provides protection and support
The carbohydrates serve as what
Identification markers to help individual cells identify one another
What is the layer structure
A phospholipid bilayer- with proteins embedded
Why is the layer a phospholipid bilayer
To give the membrane a flexible structure & to form a strong barrier between inside and outside of the cell
Homeostasis
A balance of matter & energy in and waste out
Another name for the cell membrane
Selectively permeable membrane, semipermeable membrane
What can the membrane control
Speed of molecules entering & what enters and how readily
The Concentration Gradient
In the absence of other forces, molecules will move from one area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
Two types of passive transport
Diffusion and Osmosis
Passive transport
No energy is being used to move molecules across the membrane
Diffusion
The spreading out of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
Osmosis
The movement of water molecules across a membrane from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
