  • Go to All control panel items( small tiles) then go to the Display heading. Here you can adjust resolution, number of displays etdc
  • ** Note for Windows 10 you will no longer find the display settings inside of the control panel you will find them under the Windows start menu>Settings>System>Display( or by right clicking on the desktop and setting display settings)
  • This is very important for LCD displays where the output resolution must match the native resolution of the display to have the clearest possible video display.
  • Can also change settings such as color depth, refresh rate and advanced display settings.

  • You will find them under the control panel by going to Control panel>User Accounts
  • Domain accounts are stored elsewhere( which is where you will most likely be working in an organization who use Active Directory)
  • Under this applet you can add new user accounts to a system and choose they account name and type( super user, basic user etc)
  • Also here you can change passwords add a picture for profile etc.
  • Also able to add certificate information based off user info.

  • Under the search tab you can able to define how the OS configures any of the search settings for any files, select various indexing options.

  • Used to view an overview of the system specs for your computer. Will tell you the power and type of cpu how much memory is installed, what version of OS etc.

  • Inside the Windows Firewall/ Windows Defender Firewall applet, select the between Private Settings( Home) and Guest or public settings( Away, coffee shops etc)
  • Here you can choose who and who can’t access network shares on your system.

What is the Power options applet used for inside of the Control panel and how is it accessed?

  • Accessed via Control Panel> All Control Panel items> Power Options
  • Used to create and customize power usage and power plans.
  • May have different options for sleep/ standby and how your system reacts to this state. By default sleep state means that any open apps are stored in memory, this saves power and allows the system to startup quicker.
  • If power is low usually the setting will change to hibernate. In hibernate mode your system takes everything that is open in your docs and apps and writes it to disk so that it is not lost( This is very common on laptops).

  • Credential Manager
  • Found under control panel>all control panel items> Credential Manager
  • Used as a centralized management of web and windows credentials
  • Each site can have a different username and password makes it easier to access instead of having to remember them all.
  • Also allows you to add additional Windows credentials( certificates) that are stored locally on your system.

  • Programs and Features
  • Accessed under control panel> All control panel items> Programs and features
  • This applet will list all installed applications, their size, version etc
  • Here you can choose to remove any installed applications you don’t need or are causing issues.
  • Also included in this applet are a list of Windows features that have been installed and you can choose to enable or disable them. As well as viewing any installed application and windows updates.

  • You would have to create a homegroup inside of Windows under the Control panel>All Control panel items>Homegroup
  • Here you can setup a share system on your local network where anyone with the password key that is setup can access shared items such as videos, music, documents etc.
  • ** Note this has been removed with Windows 10.
  • In order for this to work your network profile must be set to home and not public.

  • In order to run Bitlocker it’s recommended that you have a TPM( Trusted Platform Module) . If not use a flash drive and password if there is no TPM.
  • Seamless works in the background. You never know it’s there.
  • Useful in the event that a computer or laptop get’s stolen that has sensitive data on the drive. None of the data will be viewable without the correct username and password.

  • Automatically syncs when back online has built in sync conflict management.
  • ** Note Synch Center is not available in Home editions of Windows. Needs offline file functionality.
  • In order to use this functionality you would need to “ mark files” by going into the file properties and selecting “ Always available offline”
