What is another name for System Configuration? And what is it used for?
- msconfig
- Manage boot processes, startup, services, etc
- One-stop shop
Other than typing “msconfig” into the command line or search bar where can you find System Configuration?
- Can be found inside the control panel under administrative Tools. (msconfig.exe)
Under the general tab inside system configuration what items can be controlled?
- Startup selections such as Normal, Diagnostic and selective.
What is a normal startup under system configuration?
- Everything starts up just as normal( default setting)
What is a diagnostic startup inside system configuration?
- Similar to Windows safe mode, but not quite the same. loads basic devices and services and only.
What is a selective startup inside system configuration?
- You decide what to load. Can choose to start system just loading startup items without services or vice versa or choose original boot configuration.
What can be controlled inside the boot tab of system configuration?
- You can select multiple locations and which operating system to boot when you restart your computer( For those who have more than one operating system installed)
- You also have advanced options such as number of processors to use, max memory etc.
- Also have access to boot options such as no GUI boot, a choice to add to the boot log when the system starts up( helps with troubleshooting) can also check OS boot information.
What would you want to do inside the services tab inside System configuration?
- Enable and disable Windows services. And determine what starts during a boot.
- Can be helpful in determining any potential services that might be slowing the system down at boot.
- You simply check and uncheck services to choose which startup during boot process.
What would you use the startup tab for inside of System Configuration?
- Useful for choosing which programs/applications boot up when your system is starting up.
- You can easily toggle these apps on and off to determine exactly what you want to start when you boot your system.
- ** Note that for Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 the startup tab options have been moved to the task manager.
What is the tools tab used for inside of System configuration?
- Used to provide you with an easy way to start up utilities that you can use for troubleshooting such as system properties, event viewer etc.
