What is one important thing to know about installing applications on various types of systems?

• Not every computer can run every application

- Some simple checks can help to manage your desktop.

What are some very important system requirements for installing an application?

Answer 2

• Drive space
  Initial installation space requirement, application use requirement etc. Some applications use a LOT of drive space after installation.
• Another important system requirement is RAM.
  This would be above and beyond OS requirements.
  Very dependent on the application. Consider all of the other running applications and their RAM usage as well.
• OS compatibility
  Operating system(Windows, macOS, Linux)Version of OS is important. Some applications are written for one OS but not another, or compatible with 64 bit OS but not 32 bit.

What are some common application installation methods?

• Local installation. Be it a downloadable exe, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/ Optical Media or USB. This makes it very compatible with most devices and supports large installation programs.
• Network-based is the default in most organizations. Applications are staged and deployed from a central server over the network. Can be centrally managed.

What is a common thing you will be asked for when installing an application?

• Local user permissions:
  Folder/File access. Installation programs will be copying a lot of files.
• The user needs permission to write application files to the local storage drive. (Note this may not be the default in the office and an admin may be required)
• Some applications will need to install additional drivers or services which means will need to run the application as an administrator. ( Be careful when allowing this level of access!)

What are some important security considerations when installing applications?

• There’s a reason we are careful when installing applications. Applications have the same rights and permissions as the user. An unknown application can cause significant issues.
• Potential impacts to your device for installing an unknown application include application upgrade stops working, slowdowns, encrypt users files, deleted files etc. Or Malware get’s installed.
• Impact to network: Access to internal services, rights and permissions to file shares.
