Before installing Windows to a storage drive what do you first need to do?
- Carefully examine the storage location.
- Is there any data on the drive?
- Has the drive been formatted? What partitions are on the drive etc.
- If you don’t make sure of this you could accidentally overrite data on that drive.
- Good idea to perform a backup of any old data( You may need that back someday
- Most partitioning and formatting can be performed during the installation of windows.
What are some other requirements you need to make sure of before installing windows?
- Check minimum OS requirements for things such as memory, disk space etc and other recommended requirements.
- Run a hardware compatibility check runs when you perform an upgrade. Can be run manually from the Windows setup screen( Windows 10 upgrade checker)
- Plan for installation questions( Drive/partition configuration, license keys, etc.)
- Also may need to check application compatibility( Check with the app developer)
How would you perform a clean install of windows?
- Wipe everything and reload later. Backup your files
- Start setup by booting from installation media, you will need to access the BIOS to do this and change the boot order.
Can you upgrade from a 32bit version of windows to a 64 bit windows version( X64 vs x86)
- No you can’t you would have to perform a migrate instead. You would have to copy all your files to a backup storage device install a fresh version of windows and reload your data afterwards.
What are the different Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade paths?
- With Windows 7 Starter you can upgrade to Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro but that’s it. You would have to do a fresh install for Windows 10 Enterprise
- With Windows 7 Home basic you can upgrade to Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro
- With Windows 7 Home Premium you can upgrade to Windows 10 Home or Pro
- With Windows 7 Pro you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro or upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise but you would have to install Windows 10 Home fresh( why would you do that?)
- With Windows 7 Ultimate you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise but would need to do an install for Windows 10 Home
- For Windows 7 Enterprise you can upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise only.
What are the Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 upgrade paths?
- With Windows 8.1 Core you can upgrade to Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro
- With Windows 8.1 Professional you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise
- With Windows 8.1 Enterprise you can only upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise.
Can you directly upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10.
- No. You must upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
Why when installing Windows does Windows 10 tell you that it will create additional partitions on a drive for system files?
- This is primarily used for a recovery partition that holds your installation files so you don’t have to find a fresh set of files for a new installation of windows in the event that you perform a repair of windows.
When installing windows and are prompted to provide a Microsoft account to login to the computer but you don’t want to what can you do instead?
- Select offline account as displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. and then you can choose an name for your PC and create a password.
- You will also have to create 3 separate security questions to recover a password.
After installation of Windows is complete what is a good idea to perform next?
- Post-Installation make sure that Windows if fully functional. Does it work?
- If it doesn’t boot, there are bigger problems some testing is useful for unknown hardware configurations.
- After installation of Windows additional installations will be required to make sure your device is functional and secure you will want to install windows service packs, security patches, Security applications(anti virus etc) . Driver updates and application updates.
