The Cell: Part 2: Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes Flashcards
Cells are divided into two varieties:
Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
What organisms are prokaryotes?
All Bacteria are prokaryotic.
What organisms are eukaryotes?
Any form of life other than Bacteria including Human cells.
Memorize structures of both
Eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryotes does not contain organelles covered by a membrane but Eukaryotes do.
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryotes have a single circular chromosome but Eukaryotes have a linear one and humans have 46 chromosomes on each nucleus.
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryotes can contain plasmids but Eukaryotes can’t.
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryote’s ribosomes are small but Eukaryote’s ribosomes are larger.
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryote’s respiration can be Aerobic or Anaerobic but Eukaryote’s respiration is mostly Aerobic.
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryote’s cytoskeleton elements are absent but Eukaryote’s cytoskeleton elements are present
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryotes are mostly unicellular but in Eukaryotes, some are single celled and many are multicellular.
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryotes are smaller (1-10 micrometers) but Eukaryotes are larger (10-100 micrometers).
Give one difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryotes have a tough cell wall but Eukaryotes, except plants and protists, are surrounded by a cell membrane.
All organisms are believed to have a common ancestral —- cell.
Prokaryotic cell.
What is the Theory of Endosymbiosis?
Eukaryotic cells containing organelles like mitochondria and chloroplasts, evolved when free living prokaryotes took permanent residence on other larger prokaryotic cells.
