Biochemistry Part 11: Organic Compounds Part 5: Nucleic Acids Flashcards
What are the two types of Nucleic Acids?
Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic Acid (RNA)
What is the function of the DNA and RNA?
They carry hereditary information.
What do the nucleic acids consist of?
They are polymers ( chains of repeated units) of nucleotides.
What does a single Nucleotide consist of?
It consists of a phosphate, a 5 carbon sugar (either deoxyribose or ribose), and a nitrogenous base.
What are the nitrogenous bases in the DNA?
Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Thymine.
What are the nitrogenous bases in the RNA?
Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Uracil.
Which nitrogenous bases are purines and which are pyrimidines.
Adenine and Guanine are Purines. Cytosine, Thymine, and Uracil are pyrimidines.
