Biochemistry Part 7: Organic Compounds Part 2: Lipids Flashcards
What are the components that make up the lipids?
Generally 1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids.
What is a fatty acid?
A fatty acid is a hydrocarbon chain with carboxyl group on one end.
What are two types of fatty acids?
Saturated and Unsaturated.
Where do saturated fats come from?
Generally, with a few exceptions, come from animals.
What is the form of saturated fats at room temperature?
It is solid.
What type of bonds ( single, double, or triple) do saturated fats have?
Single bonds only.
What is an example of saturated fats?
Butter.
Where do unsaturated fats come from?
Plants.
What is the form of unsaturated fats at room temperature?
Liquid.
What type of bonds ( single, double, or triple) do unsaturated fats have?
At least one double bond between carbon and a hydrocarbon chain, which results in less hydrogen bonds.
What are 3 Lipid functions?
Energy storage: 1 gram of any lipid would release 9 calories of heat when burnt.
Structural: Phospholipids play important roles in the cell membrane.
Endocrine: Some lipids are hormones.
