Biochemistry Part 9: Organic Compounds Part 3: Proteins Part 2: Protein Structure Flashcards
Proteins can act as………
They can act as Enzymes, Membrane channels, and Hormones.
What does the function of the Protein depend on?
It depends on the shape of that Protein.
What are the four levels of structure of a Protein?
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary.
Explain each level of structure.
Primary: Sequence of Amino Acids that make up the Protein chain.
Secondary: Hydrogen Bonding that result in a helix structure.
Tertiary: Intricate the 3D shape of the Protein and determines the way it functions.
Quaternary: A combination of more than one polypeptide chain. Example: Hemoglobin with 4 polypeptide chains.
When do Enzymes denature?
Enzymes denature( lose their natural shape) in high temperature s or Adverse PH. When an Enzyme denatures, it can not function, because its tertiary structure altered beyond repair.
