Biochemistry Part 3: Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Flashcards
What does Hydrophobic mean?
Water Hating.
What does Hydrophilic mean?
Water Loving.
Are nonpolar molecules hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
They are hydrophobic.
Substances that are —– will dissolve in water, because—
Polar, because they are hydrophilic.
Substances that are—- will not dissolve in water, because—.
Nonpolar, because they are hydrophobic.
Carbon dioxide is polar or nonpolar? Why?
Non polar because it does not dissolve in Water.
Lipids are polar or nonpolar? Why?
Non polar because they do not dissolve in Water.
Water is polar or nonpolar? Why?
Polar because it dissolves in Water.
Why can Non polar molecules dissolve in Plasma Membrane and Polar ones cannot?
Plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer(nonpolar) which makes nonpolar dissolve easily and large polar molecules cannot.
