The Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
What is the cardiac cycle?
It s cardiac muscle contraction and the movement of blood through its chambers.
What is the order of the cardiac cycle relating to the atria, ventricles, systole and diastole.
- Atria diastole
- Ventricular diastole
- Atria systole
- Ventricular systole
What is the definition of diastole?
The relaxation phase of the cardiac muscle where chambers fill up with blood
What is the definition of systole?
The contraction phase pf the cardiac muscle where blood is forcibly ejected into the aorta and pulmonary artery.
What happens at the diastole phase?
- Atria and ventricles relax, they expand and draw blood into the atria.
- Pressure in the atria increase and the AV valve opens up
- This allows blood is passively enter the ventricles
- Ventricles fill up with blood and the SL valves close to prevent back flow of blood.
What happens at the atrial systole phase?
The atria contract, forcing remaining blood into the ventricles
What happens at the ventricular systole phase?
Pressure within the ventricles increase as they contract which close the AV valves to prevent back flow and open up the SL valve to allow blood to be passed through to the aorta and pulmonary artery.
