Gas Exchnage Flashcards
Is the blood in the capillaries surrounding the alveoli oxygenated or deoxygenated?
It is deoxygenated
Why is the blood in the capillaries the way it is?
Oxygen has been used up at the tissues for respiration and carries waste products such as carbon dioxide
What is within an alveoli?
Air that is oxygen-rich at sea level, containing small amounts of carbon dioxide
What is partial pressure?
The pressure exerted by an individual gas in a mixture of gases
What is diffusion?
The movement of gases from an area of high partial pressure to an area of low partial pressure until equilibrium is reached
What is a diffusion gradient?
The difference in areas of pressure from one side of the membrane to the other
What is the internal site for gas exchange?
Blood capillary to muscle cell membrane
What is the external site for gas exchange?
Alveoli to blood capillary membrane
What does a steep gradient mean?
There is a large rate of gas exchange
What are the values of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the alveoli at rest? (External site)
105 mmHg = Oxygen
40 mmHg = Carbon dioxide
What are the values of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the muscles at rest? (External site)
40 mmHg = Oxygen
46 mmHg = Carbon dioxide
