Classification of skills Flashcards
What is a motor skill?
an action or task that has a goal and requires voluntary movement of the body or limb to achieve the goal and is learned rather than being innate.
What continuum is under difficulty?
Simple
Complex
What is a complex skill?
A skill that requires many decisions to be made and has many sub-routines which are taught in parts
What is a simple skill?
A skill that does not require many sub-routines or may decisions to be made and can be taught as a whole, repetitively
What continuum is under environmental influence?
open and closed skills
What is an open skill?
A skill that is affected by the environment and externally paced
What is a closed skill?
A skill that is not affected by the environment and movements follow a set pattern. These skills tend to be self-paced
What continuum are under pacing?
Self-paced and externally-paced
What is a self-paced skill?
The performer controls the rate at which the skill is executed. It involves proaction by the performer and is usually a closed skill.
What is an externally paced skill?
When the environment controls the rate of performing a skill. It involves a reaction and is usually an open skill
What continuum is within muscular involvement?
Gross
Fine
What are gross skills?
Skills involving large muscle groups such as arms and legs and fundamental movement patterns such as running and jumping
What are fine skills?
Intricate movements using small muscle groups with high levels of hand-eye-coordination
What continuum are within continuity?
discrete
serial
continuous
What is a discrete skill?
a skill that has a clear beginning and end. It has no sub-routines and can be taught as a whole skill
What is a serial skill?
a skill that has several sub-routines which are put together in a sequence
What is a continuous skill?
a skill that has no obvious beginning or end - the end of one cycle is the beginning of the next.
What continuum are within organisation?
High-organisation and low orgaisation
What is a high-organisation skill?
a skill that has sub-routines that are difficult to separate such as dribbling a basketball
What is a low-organisation skill?
a skill that has sub-routines that are easily identified as separate movements such as a tennis serve.
What is an acronym used to remember the classification of skills?
CMOPED
What does c stand for in cmoped?
continuity
what does m stand for in cmoped?
muscle involvement
what does o stand for in cmoped?
organisation
what does p stand for in cmoped?
pacing
what does e stand for in cmoped?
environmental factors
what does d stand for in cmoped?
difficulty
