What is the CCC responsible for?
The cardiac control center receives information from the sensory nerves and send direction through the motor nerves to change heart rate
What are the 3 main sources of information that go to the CCC?
- Neural control
- Intrinsic control
- Hormonal control
What does Neural control carry?
It carries information from three receptors:
- Chemo-receptors
- Proprio-receptors
- Baro-receptors
What do Chemo-receptors detect?
Chemo-receptors detect chemical changes in the bloodstream (oxygen and carbon dioxide)
What do Proprio-receptors detect?
Proprio-receptors detect movement of limbs
What do Baro-receptors detect?
Baro-receptors detect changes in blood pressure
What does the Intrinsic control carry?
It carries information from:
- Thermo-receptors
- Venous Return
What do Thermo-receptors detect?
Thermo-recpetors detect changes in temperature of the blood. The warmer the blood, the more viscous it is and therefore the slower the speed of nerve impulse (heart rate) transmission.
What is Venous Return?
Venous return is the amount of blood going back to the heart. An increased venous return stretches the right atria causing the SA node to fire faster and then the right ventricle stretches further and because it is elastic it contracts with more force. Therefore the SV increases and so does the Q.
What does the Hormonal control carry?
The Hormonal control carries information from:
- Adrenaline
- Nor-adrenaline
What does adrenaline and nor-adrenaline do?
Adrenaline is released from the adrenal glands and increases the force of ventricular contraction (therefore SV) and increases the speed of electrical activity through the heart (therefore HR)
After information is sent to the CCC, where does it go?
Information is wither sent to the sympathetic nervous system (increases heart rate) or to the parasympathetic nervous system (decreases heart rate)
What is the sympathetic nervous system otherwise known as?
The accelerator nerve
What is the parasympathetic nervous system otherwise known as?
The vagus nerve
