Mechanics of Breathing Flashcards
What are the two control centres within the Respiratory Control Centre (RCC)
(ICC) Inspiratory Control Centre
(ECC) Expiratory Control Centre
What happens to our breathing when we are sleeping?
We actively inspire but passively expire
How does the ICC work?
1) the ICC control the rhythm of breathing
2) it sends an impulse down the nerve to the inspiratory muscles
3) the impulse lasts 2 seconds
4) after 2 seconds it stops the impulse and the muscles relax
What muscles are involved during inspiration and what do they do?
External intercoastals (contract) Diaphragm (contract)
What two muscles are recruited during for inspiration during exercise?
Sternocleidomastoid
Pectoralis minor
What happens during inspiration?
1) external intercostals and diaphragm contract
2) rib cage pulls up and out
3) air pressure in lungs decrease
4) air is drawn in
What happens during inspiration during exercise?
1) sternocleidomastoid and pectoralis minor contract
2) rib cage gets pulled up and out more
3) air pressure in lungs decrease more
4) more air is drawn in
What two muscles are responsible for expiration at rest?
1) external intercostals (relax)
2) diaphragm (relax)
What two muscles are recruited for expiration during exercise?
Internal intercostals
Rectus abdominis
What happens during expiration at rest?
1) External intercostals and diaphragm relax
2) rib cage goes down and in
3) air pressure in lungs increase
4) air is pushed out
What happens during expiration during exercise?
1) Internal intercostals and rectus abdominis relax
2) rib cage goes down and in more
3) air pressure in lungs increases more
4) more air is forced out
