Ageism
Form of prejudice in which older adults are stereotyped by characteristics found only on a few members of their group
Older Adult
Older than 65
- young old 60-74
- middle old 75-84
- old old 85+
Disengagement theory
Maintains that older adults often withdrawal from usual roles and become more introspective and self-focused
Eriksons Theory
Identity vs despair and disgust. Older adults continue to look forward but now also look back and begin to reflect on their life

Havighurst’s Theory
Old age tasks are concerned with the maintenance of social contacts and relationships.
Successful aging depends on a persons ability to be flexible and adapt to new age related roles
Social isolation
Sense of being alone and lonely as a result of having fewer meaningful relationships.
