Criteria
Measurable qualities, attributes, or characteristics that specify skill, knowledge, or health status.
Evaluating
Nurse and patient together measure how well the patient has achieved the outcomes specified in the plan of care.
Purpose: patients achievement directs future nurse patient interactions
Standards
Levels of performance accepted and expected by the nursing staff or other health team members.

Four steps to improving performance
- Discover a problem
- Plan a strategy using indicators
- Implement a change
- Assess the change. If outcome is not met plan a new strategy.
Peer review
The evaluation of one staff member by another staff member on the same level of hierarchy of the organization.
Quality-assurance programs
Specially designed programs that promote excellence in nursing.
Developed for a small unit or entire institution.
Enable nursing to be accountable for quality of nursing care.
Structure evaluation
Focus on the care environment. Physical facilities and equipment, organizational characteristics, policies and procedures, fiscal resources, and personnel resources
Process evaluation
The nature and sequence of activities carried out by nurses implementing the nursing process. Make explicit acceptable levels of performance.
Outcome evaluation
Focuses on measurable changes in the health status of the patient or the end results of nursing care.
Quality improvement
The commitment and approach used to continuously improve every process in every part of an organization with the intent of meeting and exceeding customer expectations and outcomes
Nursing audit
Method of evaluating nursing care that involves reviewing patient records to assess the outcomes of nursing care or the process by which these outcomes were achieved
Concurrent evaluation
Nursing care and patient outcomes are evaluated while the patient is receiving care.
Uses direct observation of nursing care, patient interviews, and chart review to determine if specific evaluative criteria are met
Retrospective evaluation
Nursing care and patient outcomes are evaluated after the patient has been discharged.
Uses post discharge questions, patient interviews, or chart review
