Basic human needs
Common to all people and are essential to the health and survival of all people
Physiologic needs
Oxygen, water, food, temperature elimination, sexuality, physical activity and rest
Safety and security needs
Have physical and emotional components
Physical safety- protected from potential or actual harm.
Emotional Safety- trusting others and being free of fear anxiety and apprehension
Love and belonging needs
Understanding and acceptance of others in both giving and perceiving love, and the feeling of belonging to families, peers, friends, neighborhood, and community
Self-esteem needs
The need for a person to feel good about himself or herself to feel pride and a sense of accomplishment and to believe that others also respect and appreciate those accomplishments
Self-Actualization needs
The need for individuals to reach their full potential through development of their unique capabilities.
Family
Group of people who live together and are emotionally bonded.
Nuclear family
Two parents and their children
Extended family
Aunts, uncles, grandparents
Blended family
Formed when parents bring unrelated children from previous relationships together to form a new family.
Community
Specific population or group of people living in the same geographic area under similar regulations and having common values, interests and needs
Risk factors for altered family health
Lifestyle - teenage preg, drugs, divorce, altered
nutrition, unsafe home environment
Psychosocial - inadequate childcare resources,
inadequate income, family conflict
Environmental - unsafe home due to income/
knowledge, stress from work, pollution
Developmental - new babies without family support
systems, elderly, unmarried young mothers
lacking resources
Biological - birth defects, retardation, genetic
predisposition to diseases
Community factors affecting health
- availability of healthcare
- housing codes
- police and fire depts
- nutritional services
- zoning regulations (sep of residential vs industry)
- waste disposal services
- air and water pollution
- health education
- Food sanitation
- recreational opportunities
- violent crimes or drug use
