The adductor canal Flashcards
What is the adductor canal?
Narrow tunnel in the thigh running through adductor magnus. Serves as a passageway from structures moving between the anterior thigh and posterior leg
What are the contents of the adductor canal
Femoral artery–> popliteal artery
Femoral Vein–> popliteal vein
Saphenous nerve
Nerve of the vastus medialis
What are the borders of the adductor canal
Anteromedial- Sartorius
Lateral- vastus medialis
Posterior: adductor longus and adductor magnus
What is an adductor canal block
Local anaesthetic administered into the saphenous nerve in isolation or in conjunction with the vastus medialis. Provides a sensory block for the distal thigh, femur, knee and lower leg on the medial
What is adductor canal compression syndrome
Entrapment of the neurovascular bundle within the adductor canal. It is a rare condition usually caused by hypertrophy of adjacent muscles such as vastus medialis.Common in young males who present with claudication symptoms
