Lymphatics of the leg Flashcards
What are the two groups of lymphs in the leg
Superficial lymph nodes
Deep lymph nodes
Describe the course of the superficial lymph nodes
Lateral vessels- Arise from lateral surface of foot, follow small saphenous vein, enter popliteal nodes
Medial vessels- originate from doral foot, travel up anterior and posterior leg, then pass with great saphenous vein. Terminates in thigh draining sub inguinal nodes
What are the inguinal nodes?
Found in the upper aspect of the femoral triangle, numbered 1-20. Subdivided into 3 groups: superficil subinguinal, superfifical sub inguinal, deep sub inguinal
Describe the superfifical inguinal nodes
These form a line directly below the inguinal ligament and receive lymph from the penis, scrotum, perineum, buttock and abdominal wall
Describe the superificial sub inguinal nodes
Located on each side of the proximal section of the great saphenous vein. Receive afferent input primarily from the superfifical lymphatic vessels of the lower leg
Describe the deep sub-inguinal nodes
Most commonly found on the medial aspect of the femoral vein
Describe the popliteal nodes?
Most commonly found in fat reserves in the popliteal fossa. Recieve lymph from the lateral superficial vessels
Efferent vesses of the popliteal nodes pass almost enitrely alongside the femoral vessels to empty into the deep inguinal nodes.
