Th - PET imaging microglia Flashcards
What is PET? (meaning)
Positron Emission Tomography
What is molecular imaging? (explain complicated)
Molecular imaging is a type of medical imaging that provides detailed pictures of what is happening inside the body at the molecular, biochemical and cellular level
What is PET? (explain complicated)
PET imaging is a molecular imaging technique based on detection of isotope labelled tracers and used for imaging biochemical processes sin the body
What is microgliosis?
Increase of the number of microglia and their concentration in localized areas
Where are activated microglia concentrated in MS? (2)
In the inflammatory active lesion and the borders of the chronic active lesions
Where are activated microglia concentrated in Alzheimer’s?
In the amyloid beta plaques
What is TSPO? (meaning)
Translocator protein
Why is TSPO a good target for PET imaging in Alzheimer’s disease and MS?
Because it’s overexpressed on activated microglia, not on resting microglia
(Low/high) uptake of TSPO tracer in a lesion indicates an active lesion
High
(Low/high) uptake of TSPO tracer in a lesion indicates an inactive lesion
Low
