Mo - Special seminar: oncogenic bacteria, more than just Hp(v) Flashcards
On average, how many mutations are needed to make cancer?
12
What do proto-oncogens do normally?
Control the growth of the cells
How can retroviruses cause cancer? (simple)
By oncogene capture
What is oncogene capture? (complicated)
When retroviruses capture oncogenes from host DNA and the oncogene mixes with the virus particle, then through nonhomologous recombination in a newly infected cell the virus can have the oncogene added to itself.
How can DNA viruses cause cancer? (simple)
By using T antigens
How do DNA viruses cause cancer (COMPLICATED)
T antigens kick quiescent cells into the S phase of cell replication. The T antigens have a high affinity to Rb, meaning that they skip the checkpoint before the S phase of the cell cycle.
How can an extracellular bacteria cause cancer? (2)
By using DNA damaging toxins to cause double stranded breaks and by oxidative stress DNA damage
How can intracellular pathogens cause cancer? (very easy)
By targeting p53
