Textbook Chapter 7 Flashcards
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
A disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Allergen
Antigen causing the reaction. (food, chemical, pollen, or a drug)
Anaphylaxis
Severe, life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction resulting in decreased BP, airway obstruction, and severe hypoxia.
Antimicrobial
Antimicrobial products kill or slow the spread of microorganisms.
Antiviral
Can reduce the replication of viruses. They do not kill the virus thus are no considered a cure
Autoantibodies
Antibodies formed against self-antigens
Brachoconstriction
Narrowing of the airways is known as bronchoconstriction.
Colostrum
First milk your body produces during pregnancy.
Complement
Involves a group of inactive proteins numbered C1-C9 that circulate in the blood
Cytokines
A type of protein that is made by certain immune and non-immune cells and has an effect on the immune system.
Cytotoxic
Toxic to living cells
Encephalopathy
Any diffuse disease of the brain that alters brain function or structure
Erythema
Superficial reddening of the skin
Glycoprotein
Any of a class of proteins that have carbohydrate groups attached to the polypeptide chai
Hypogammaglobulinemia
Low antibody levels because of B-cell defect
Hypoproteinemia
Lower-than-normal levels of protein in the body.
Mast Cells
Connective tissue cells that are present in large numbers in the mucosa of the respiratory and digestive tract
Monocytes
Monocytes are a critical component of the innate immune system.
Mononuclear Phagocytic System
family of cells comprising bone marrow progenitors, blood monocytes and tissue macrophages.
Polymerase Chain Reaction
A laboratory method used to make many copies of a specific piece of DNA from a sample that contains very tiny amounts of that DNA.
Pruitic
Itchy
Retovirus
Family of RNA viruses that includes HIV
Splenectomy
Removal of the spleen
Thymus
Small organ that lies in the upper chest under the breastbone. It makes white blood cells, called lymphocytes, which protect the body against infections.
Titer
Lab test that measures the presence and amount of antibodies in blood
