Test 2 Chapter 16 Flashcards
Ectopic
An ectopic hormone is a hormone produced by tumors derived from tissue that is not typically associated with its production.
Exocrine
Exocrine glands secrete their substances through ducts onto your body’s surfaces. On the other hand, endocrine glands secrete their substances directly into your bloodstream
Glucosuria
Glucose in the urine
Ketoacidosis
A serious complication of diabetes that can be life-threatening. DKA is most common among people with type 1 diabetes
Ketones
A type of chemical that your liver produces when it breaks down fats
Macroangiopathy
A disease of the large blood vessels in which fat and blood clots build up and stick to the vessel walls, blocking the flow of blood.
Microanginopathy
One of the major complications of diabetes mellitus. The small blood vessel changes affecting the retinal and renal vasculature are responsible for blindness and kidney failure
Negative Feedback
The response will reverse or cause the opposite effect of the original stimulus. Ex. As levels of glucose increase, the secretion of insulin increases, thus increasing movement of glucose into the cells lowering the level in the blood. When glucose levels decrease, insulin secretion decreases.
Neuropathy
Result of damage to the nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord
Polydipsia
Excessive thirst
Polyphasia
Eats excessive amounts of food
Tropic Hormones
Hormones that have a stimulating effect on other glands
