Chemical Dependency
Broad term that refers to the inappropriate or unnecessary (non-medical) use of drugs or chemicals that impairs a person’s function
Depressant
Depressant substances reduce arousal and stimulation. They affect the central nervous system, slowing down the messages between the brain and body.
Euphoria
A sense of pleasure (high) or may alter a person’s sense of reality and decrease awareness of their environment
Hepatotoxin
Irritant that causes metabolic changes in the liver cells leading to lipid accumulation in the cells, then to necrosis, and finally to fibrosis or scar tissue formation
Stimulant
Stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up messages travelling between the brain and body. They can make a person feel more awake, alert, confident or energetic.
Tolerance
The body’s adaptation to the substance in time resulting in needing to increase amount of substance to get the same effect
