Test 5 Flashcards
What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is a resources that includes wind solar water geothermal and biomass energy. It is a sustainable energy source and can be used over and over again (infinite)
What is nonrenewable energy?
Non-renewable energy is a finite and can only be used once eg oil coal and gas
What are ways that we use oil on a daily basis?
To Fuel our cars, heat are houses and to fly aircraft
What are advantages of oil?
It gives of hardly any smoke and it provides us with great heat
What are disadvantages of oil?
It is very expensive and we have to import it and it’s bad for the environment
% of energy from oil
In Ireland 48% of our energy comes from oil
% of gas we use
In Ireland 27% of our energy comes from gas and it has gone up by 8% in the last decade
Describe coal?
While we don’t depend on coal anymore. 10% of our energy still comes from coal. ESB run a station in moneypoint on the Shannon estuary in Co.Clare
What is HEP
Hydroelectric power (HEP) is the creation of electricity using the force of falling water. To this we build a dam across a river to trap the water
Advantages of HEP
HEP stations and turbines cab generate cheap clean and renewable electricity
Disadvantages of HEP
Families may have to relocate as a result of creating a new reservoir, new roads and bridges have to be built and the the dam can stop fish from swimming upstream this could reduce the fish stocks.
Advantages of wind energy
It creates jobs, it is sustainable and clean energy and it reduces the. need to import energy sources
Disadvantages of wind energy
It can cause noise pollution and can be an eyesore to look at
About global warming
Burning fossil fuels can increase greenhouse gases these gases trap the suns heat into the atmosphere causing temperatures to rise and also causing climate change
About acid rain
Acid rain washes away nutrients from the soil it can wipe out fish stocks and forests can become diseased and city’s and homes weather the stone
