Test 3 Flashcards
How are igneous rocks formed
By volcanic activity
Name 2 igneous rocks
Basalt,Granite
Where is basalt found
In Antrim in the giants causeway
Where is Granite found
In the mourne Mountains
Tell me About basalt
It is an extrusive rock igneous rock . It has tiny tiny crystals because the lava cools quickly
Tell me about Granite
It is an intrusive rock igneous rock it has large crystals as the magma cools slowly. Some of the crystals are mica, quartzite and feltsqark
What is a sedimentary rock
It is a rock made of pieces of other rocks as well as dead plants. The layers of it are compressed and cement together. Two sedimentary rocks are limestone and sandstone
Tell me about limestone

What is sandstone
Sandstone is reddish/brown in colour. It is formed from sand that has been worn away and carried away by rivers. It compressed and cemented. It is found in the Galtee mountains in Co. Tipperary
What is a metamorphic rock
A metamorphic rock is formed when an igneous or sedimentary rock is put under great heat or pressure
Name 2 metamorphic rocks
Quartzite and marble
What is Quartzite
Quartzite is used for counter tops and road chippings. It is found in Co. Wicklow
It is a white/grey colour. It is formed when sandstone is put under great heat or pressure. It is a very hard rock
What is marble
It is used for counter tops and fireplaces. It is found in Co.cork. It is coloured red and is formed when limestone is put under great heat or pressure. It is a very hard rock and it can vary in colour.
What is a natural resource
It is something in the natural world that people can use to their advantage
Energy
Some rocks can create energy they contain fossil fuels that are extracted different ways from the crust
