Mocks Flashcards

1
Q

Tell me about convection currents

A

When magma is heated in the mantle, it rises towards the crust. As it rises it cools and moves sideways. This causes friction between the magma and the crust and pulls the plates. The magma cools and sinks back down into the mantle. This process is constantly repeated.

Q

Why are volcanoes found in Iceland?

A

Mountains on the seabed form when two constructive plates pull away from each other. Hot magma rise up and cools. When magma wells up through the cracks in the crust it sometimes rise above the surface of the ocean. These mountains are called volcanic islands. An example is the mid Atlantic Ridge, Iceland and the two plates here are the urasion and north American.

Q

Tell me about the formation of limestone

A

The limestone in Ireland was formed around 350 years ago under sea when Ireland was located close to the equator. It is made from the components of shells and fossils of animals. The weight of the upper layers compress and cement them together to form strata. This then formed limestone.
Limestone it is grey in colour and is course grained. This is found in the Burnn in County Clare

Q

What is regolith

A

Weathering and erosion produce loose material called regolith Mass movement is when regolith moves down a slope due to gravity.

Q

What is a depression?

A

This is ascending and due to this temperature is fall. There is low atmospheric pressure and winds blow air in an anticlockwise direction. Isobars are close together indicating that there are strong winds. It brings cloudy skies and wet weather.

Q

What is the impact of climate change?

A

Due to climate change the glacier are melting. This means that polar bears lose their homes. It also means that there is rising sea levels. This affects settlement near rivers as houses get flooded more often.

Weather problems will become more extreme and we will experience more storms or droughts

Temperatures will continue to increase destroying plants and crops

Q

What is a rain gauge

A

Precipitation is any form of liquid or solid water particles that fall from the atmosphere and reach the surface of the Earth. It includes rain, snow, sleet, hail and drizzle. A rain gauge is used to measure the amount of rainfall. A measuring cylinder with a funnel on top is placed in an open area, not sheltered by buildings and trees, in order to ensure an accurate reading. The rain falls through a funnel into the cylinder, which is marked in millimetres. When the cylinder is removed, the amount of rain that has fallen can be recorded The unit of measurement of rainfall is millimetres.

Q

What is urban sprawl

A

Urban sprawl is the rapid spread of housing from the cities outwards into the countryside. As a result of this, valuable farmland and green open spaces are taken over by roads and houses. Smaller villages and towns become absorbed by the city, putting pressure on services such as water supply and sewage.

Q

What is the impact of traffic congestion and how can we reduce it?

A

Due to people moving within an urban area traffic congestion occurs. This happens every time during rush-hour. Rush-hour is the time when most cars are out in the morning going to work and school drop-off and in the evening. We can improve this by having more quality bus corridors. This gets rid of some traffic and releases less gases into the atmosphere, e.g. CO2. You can also have bypasses around major towns to reduce the amount of cars going in.

Q

Why would a shop located at the edge of a town

A

A shop will locate at the edge of a town as the land is cheaper here and they also have room to expand if needed

16
Q

What cold fronts?

A

Cold air fronts bring heavy rain and cold winds. It occurs when a cold air mass replaces a warm air mass.

17
Q

What are occluded fronts

A

Please bring rainy and fluctuating temperatures. They occur at the point where a cold front takes over a warm front or vice versa.

18
Q

What impacts the income of a developing country?

A

Unfair trade: unfair trade in developing countries impact the income of workers as they don’t get a fair pay leading to a poor quality of products and developed countries not paying the proper price for the products. If a product was made fairly, it will always have the fair trade symbol on it.

Education: There are currently 263 million children aged 6-17 out of school, most of them in the developing world. In Africa, 42 per cent of children will drop out of school before finishing their education. There are many reasons for this. Parents might not be able to afford to keep their children in school. Education of girls is a particular problem in the developing world, with many dropping out of school to get married or because of teenage pregnancy. Without education, you are unable to get a good quality job which leads to a lower slandered of living

19
Q

What effects mass movement?

A

Gradient, water, human activity, vegetation and animals

20
Q

How can we limit/preserve mass movement?

A

Vegetation such as trees and vines can be placed on slopes to stabilise them. Steps can be built to trap moving material and restricting over grazing helps vegetation and stops creep

21
Q

Why does planting trees prevent desertification?

A

Tree roots act like an anchor holding the soil or sand in place

22
Q

How does overgrazing affect desertification?

A

Farmers have increased their heard numbers leading to overgrazing. This destroys the vegetation of plants there and makes the soil infertile. Over grazing occurs when vegetation is exposed to increased grazing for a long period of time or when too many cattle or sheep graze on an area of land. Changing farming practices is the most important solution to desertification and farmers sometimes need education about these practices

23
Q

Name two causes of desertification

A

Over grazing and overcropping

24
Q

How does over cropping affect desertification?

A

Over cropping occurs when crops are continuously grown on a piece of land. The nutrients are constantly being removed from the soil and the soil eventually loses its nutrients and becomes infertile and exhausted. Careful management of crap rotation with overcome these problems.

25
Q

What are two significant weather effects of storm Desmond?

A

Over the winter of 2015 - 2016 two and some places three times the amount of rainfall felt that they would normally get in winter this lead to many homes and businesses flooding forcing businesses to shut down during the busy Christmas period. Farmland and livestock was also lost
