Tendon injuries Flashcards
What is the function of a tendon?
Gives stability and strength past 90 degrees
What is the structure of a tendon?
Collagen bundles covered by endotendineum bound into fascicles, which are covered with paratenon and bound into tendons which are covered by epitenon
What are tendon sheaths?
Thickening in tendon which form annular pulleys
What cells are present in tendons>
Type 1 collagen fibres
Tenocytes
What are the types of tendon injury?
Degeneration Inflammation Enthesiopathy Traction apophysitis Avulsion +/- bone fragment Rupture Laceration Crush/ischaemia Nodules
What s degeneration a precursor to?
Rupture
What is enthesiopathy?
Inflammation of tendon at insertion to bone
What is traction apophysitis?
Inflammation due to recurrent load
What is avulsion?
Failure at insertion
Load exceeding failure strength while muscle contracting
What are the types of tendon rupture?
Substance
Musculotendinous
What causes intrasubstance rupture?
Load exceeding failure strength
What are the clinical features of musculotendinous rupture?
Sudden searing pain
Where are lacerations seen most often?
Finger flexors
What are the treatment options for avulsion?
Conservatione- limited application
Operative- reattach tendon, fixation of bone fragment
What are the treatment options for tendon rupture
Conservative- mobilise, splint/cast
Operative
