Temporal and Infratemporal Fossa Flashcards
Temporomandibular Joint
Modified hinge joint
has articular disk
Articular Disk
made of fibrocartilage
Superior and Inferior compartments
Superior Compartment of Articular Disk
gliding back and forth; side to side movements
attaches to tendon of lateral pterygoid
Inferior Compartment of Articular Disk
Hinge movements
Attachments of Temporomandibular Joint
superiorly- articular tubercle and mandibular fossa
inferiorly- neck of mandible
Temporalis Muscle
Elevates and pulls back mandible, right and left lateral movement for grinding and chewing
Innervation of Temporalis M
Anterior and Posterior Deep Temporal Nerves
Insertion of Temporalis M
Coronoid process and anterior surface of ramus of mandible
Masseter Muscle
Elevate, forward and backward movements of mandible, R and L movements
Innervation of Masseter
Masseteric Nerve
Insertion of Masseter
Angle and lateral suface of mandible
Lateral Pterygoid Muscle
moves mandible forward and down
R and L lateral mvmts for chewing and grinding
Innervation for Lateral Pterygoid Muscle
Lateral Pterygoid Nerves
Insertion for Lateral Pterygoid Muscle
pterygoid fovea on anterior surface of neck of mandible
joint capsule and articular disc of temporomandibular joint
Origin of Temporalis M
Inferior temporal line, temporal fossa, temporalis fascia
Origin of Masseter
maxillary process of zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch
Origin of Superior Head of Lateral Pterygoid
Infratemporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid
Origin of Inferior Head of Lateral Pterygoid
Lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate
Medial Pterygoid Muscle
Elevates and moves forward mandible, R and L lateral movements
Innervation of Pterygoid Muscle
Medial pterygoid nerve
Origin of Deep Head of Medial Pterygoid M
Medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate
Origin of Superficial Head of Medial Pterygoid M
tuberosity of maxilla
Temporal Fossa Connection to Infratemporal Fossa
space between zygomatic arch and cranial wall
Orbit Connection to Infratemporal Fossa
Inferior orbital fissure
Middle Cranial Fossa Connection to Infratemporal Fossa
Foramen Ovale and Foramen Spinosum
Pterygopalatine Fossa Connection to Infratemporal Fossa
Pterygomaxillary Fissure
Nerve to Medial Pterygoid
inn medial pterygoid an tensor tympani and tensor veli palatine
Meningeal Branch of V3
Enters middle cranial fossa thru foramen spinosum
inn dura mater
Nerve to the Masseter
Inn masseter
sense fibers to temporomandibular joint
Nerve to Lateral Pterygoid
inn pterygoid
Deep Temporal Nerves
Anterior and Posterior, sometimes a Middle
Buccal Nerve
sensory to skin and mucosa of cheek
Auriculotemporal Nerve
2 roots that wrap around middle meningeal a
inn auricle, external auditory meatus, tympanic membrane, temporomandibular joint, scalp
Inferior Alveolar Nerve
sensory and motor
inn mandibular teeth thru mandibular foramen
exits as mental nerve
gives off nerve to mylohyoid
Nerve to Mylohyoid
motor branch of inferior alveolar nerve
inn mylohyoid and ant belly of digastric
Lingual Nerve
sense to front 2/3 of tongue and floor of mouth
Otic Ganglion
Parasympathetic ganglion in V3
get preganglionic fibers from lesser petrosal nerve that synapse in ganglion
postganglionic fibers go to parotid gland via auriculotemporal nerve
Chorda Tympani Pathway
from CN7
exits temporal bone via petrotympanic fissure
joins lingual nerve at infratemporal fossa
Chorda Tympana Innervation
sense/ taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
preganglionic parasymp to submandibular ganglion; postganglionic fibers go to submandibular and sublingual glands
Branches of Maxillary Artery
Mandibular, Pterygoid, Pterygopalatine
Mandibular Part of Maxillary Artery
Accompanied by auriculotemporal nerve and maxillary vein
5 branches
Deep Auricular Artery
from Madibular
supplies external auditory meatus and outer surface of tympanic membrane
Anterior Tympanic Artery
from Mandibular
thru petrotympanic fissure w/ chorda tympani
supplies mucosa of tympanic cavity
Middle Meningeal Artery
from Mandibular
thru foramen spinosum to supply dura mater and skull of middle cranial fossa
Accessory Meningeal Artery
from Mandibular
thru foramen ovale to suplly trigeminal ganglion and surrounding dura mater
Inferior Alveolar Artery
from Mandibular
accompanies alveolar n in mandibular canal and exits mental foramen w/ mental nerve
gives off artery to mylohyoid
Massenteric Artery
supplies Masseter
from Maxillary A
Anterior and Posterior Deep Temporal Arteries
from Maxillary A
Supply temporalis muscle
Pterygoid Arteries
from Maxillary A
Supply medial and lateral pterygoids
Buccal Artery
from Maxillary A
supplies buccinator, skin of cheek, mucosa of oral cavity
Pterygoid Venous Plexus
network of veins located b/t temporalis and pterygoid mm
drain from vv traveling with maxillary arteries
links to Cavernous Sinus, Inferior Ophthalmic V, Facial Vein via deep facial vein
