Q

What are the advantages of the physical developments ?

A
  • use of lab-based testing ( lactate Sampling )
  • e.g. taking a sample of blood, uncovering amount of lactic acid present
  • this shows if the performer is respiring anaerobically or aerobically
  • this allows the coach to create a training programme to improve fitness level.
  • cryotherapy chambers (liquid nitrogen surrounds limbs at -110)
  • causes vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the limbs redirecting blood flow to the core , reducing swelling and seeping up recovery.

Q

What are the disadvantages of the physical developments ?

A
  • lab testing is expensive and potentially dangerous
  • requires specialist
  • not available for all levels
  • GPS vests restrict movement
  • the performer lose precision

Q

What are the advantages of the behavioural developments ?

A
  • SCAT and CSAI-2 questionnaires are time and cost effective
  • gather objective and reliable data in a short amount of time
  • Mental rehearsal improves self efficacy and kinaesthetic awareness
  • reduces muscular tension

Q

What are the disadvantages of the behavioural developments ?

A
  • questionnaires can be scrutinised
  • may show socially desirable results , hinders validity
  • cannot expand on answers
  • coach needs to use mutiluple methods of data collection such as interviews and observation
  • specialists are required , cost and time consuming
  • some SMT cannot be used during games

Q

What are the advantages of the technical developments ?

A
  • Qualaysis and dartfish allows coaches to identity weaknesses in a performers technique
  • force plates improved running technique
  • as they create vector graphs , allowing specialists to analyse the force produced
  • their technique is altered to achieve the best possible change of winning
  • e.g. a high jumpers resultant force must be optimum to gain height over the pole

Q

What are the advantages of the tactical developments ?

A
  • GPS allows the coach to track how far a performer has travelled in a game.
    • It creates an activity profile such as a heat map, which allows the coach to see where the performer has spent most time on the pitch.
    • This allows the coach to check for social loafing as they are able to compare the data.
    • They also allow the coach to check for injuries/fatigue. E.g. if a player has not covered a lot of distance, it could indicate an injury/fatigue.
    • Notational analysis allows the coach to gain in game statistics quickly (e.g. pass completion rate) which allows in game decision’s to be made such as formation changes or substitutions.

Q

What are the disadvantages of the tactical developments ?

A
  • GPS is expensive, which means it is not accessible for everybody.
    • as the performer will be aware they are being observed, this may cause evaluation apprehension which will cause performance to decrease
    • GPS can restrict movement which can increase anxiety levels, which increases muscular tension, decreasing muscular control which will increase performance levels.
    • Notational analysis is subjective and the coach may miss parts of performance meaning that the data is not 100% accurate (Between 30-45% accurate)
    • This means the data may cause the coach to make wrong decisions such as substituting the wrong player, which will decrease self efficacy.
