What happened is the first stage of emergence of sport ?
A
- Took place pre 19’ century (Pre 1800)
- Sport was organised entirely by boys themselves;
- Boys had learnt these rules from their villages;
- This meant that that there were different versions of games around the country
- It was often unruly and included gambling, hunting and drinking.

What happened is the second stage of emergence of sport ?
A
- Took place in the early 19th century
- Introduced by Dr Thomas Arnold who wanted to reduce gambling and drinking and develop muscular Christianity and moral integrity.
- Sixth form students became responsible for organisine sporting activities
- Organised ‘house’ games on school grounds;

What happened is the third stage of emergence of sport ?
A
- Took place in the late 19 century;
- Sport was now used to develop the characteristics that prepare students for work after education.
- E.g. Discipline, leadership and team work
- Sport now took place in purpose built facilities e.g. Public swimming pools/stadiums
- Additionally, due to the industrial revolution, factory owners created teams, which workers played for.
- Players started to be paid for teams (Professionals)
- This helped improve health of workers, Improving productivity
