Psychology ( Faulty Group Processes ) Flashcards
1
Q
What is actual productivity?
Hint : it’s an equation
A
Potential productivity - Losses due to faulty group processes
2
Q
What is the definition of actual productivity
A
Is the performance level achieved by the team/group
3
Q
What is potential productivity ?
A
The team’s best possible performance
4
Q
Why do motivation losses occur ?
A
- Lack of concentration and low levels of arousal
from the team or an individual; - Social Loafing: Where the performer ‘hides’
within the team; - The Ringlemann effect: As the group size
increases, the individual performer’s effort
levels decrease;
5
Q
Why do coordination losses occur ?
A
- Lack of communication and team work;
- Team games that require high levels of
interaction are more affected by coordination losses; - For example, a player may misunderstand
tactics. - Players fail to listen to the coaches instructions
e.g. tracking back
6
Q
How are motivational losses overcome ?
A
- Vary the practice as it is fun and enjoyable, which helps to increase the performers motivation; This removes social loafing. As a result, less likely to hide within a team
- E.g. More likely to show for the ball.
- train in small groups; E.g. Defenders/ Attackers
training in isolation. ( Removes the ringlemann
effect) - Increase self efficacy by using attributions
correctly; - For example, attribute success to internal stable
factors, such as ability; - Encourage team mates to be supportive and
avoid social cliques; - Maintain stability within the group;
- Create a team identity by providing a team kit;
- Social outing (team bonding exercises)
7
Q
How are coordination losses overcome ?
A
- Give the performers specific roles and responsibilities;
- Then, explain the role of the individual performer;
- Train/practise more often to ensure performers have good levels of communication and team work;
- This will allow the performer to understand when to overlap/cover their team mates
