TB 35 - Overhaul Procedures Flashcards
The main objectives of overhaul are:
- Provide for FF safety by limiting exposure
- Ensure fire is out and potential for rekindle is eliminated
- Leave scene undisturbed (insofar as possible) to aid investigators and insurance companies.
- Preserve all salvageable contents/possessions and minimize further damage
- Premises turned over to a responsible party. Deem building safe or unsafe to reoccupy. Secure as needed.
Time and ______ are currently the best lines of defense against any dangerous form of gases, vapors, and particulates.
shielding
While mechanical ventilation assists with improving the environment following a knockdown, ______ has a more significant effect on improving the atmosphere and creating a safer environment.
time
Overhaul
______ should be employed to determine the proper level of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed and to complete any necessary post-incident personnel exposure reports.
Gas meters
Firefighting gear provides protection from products of combustion in two forms:
• Respiratory protection (SCBA)
• Skin Absorption (Turn-outs)
LAFD issued turnouts have a MOISTURE and VAPOR barrier to provide shielding vs toxic gases/vapors. Although the firefighting hood DOES NOT have a VAPOR BARRIER, it should be worn to minimize exposure from these toxins and vapors.
Additional exposure can be eliminated or reduced by proper ________.
maintenance of turnouts.
Overhaul
The IC or their representative shall cause all structural and environmental HAZARDS to be clearly identified with Department issued FIRE-LINE TAPE to effectively alert all fire personnel to the known hazards, including any compromised areas.
Areas that are deemed to be unsafe for personnel to access shall be completely restricted – with BOTH _________ and __________ tape.
- fire line tape
- red and white striped barricade tape
During the overhaul briefing, the IC shall review the ICS _____ form with all officers assigned to participate in the overhaul.
This form documents all hazards/risks, area’s involved and mitigation measures.
ICS 215A Incident Action Plan Safety Analysis
Arson Investigators
The IC shall establish a fire _____ with the minimum required personnel and ensure that the scene and any potential evidence remains undisturbed until Arson has completed their investigation and authorized the overhaul to begin.
watch
Types of Overhaul Options available to the IC:
- Complete Overhaul - traditional methods
- Wet Overhaul - no salvageable content exists, apply sufficient foam (fire watch in place after)
- Fire Watch - address any flare ups, preserve the scene as much as possible
- Thermal Imaging Camera - ensure complete knockdown
Complete Overhaul Option (traditional):
Minimal PPE may be considered when the occupancy has been well ventilated for a minimum of ______.
-ONE HOUR
(Gas meters shall be utilized and put in place to monitor the atmosphere levels throughout the occupancy and for the duration of the overhaul.)
Wet Overhaul Option:
Companies will meet the overhaul objectives by applying sufficient foam to the contents and all areas of the involved structure, paying particular attention to?
-Difficult to reach areas
-Points of the occupancy where structural members overlap or cross one another.
What PPE will companies don to re-enter a structure to identify and address any possible flare ups or hot spots during a Fire Watch?
Full PPE
When a complete overhaul is performed, overhaul piles shall be established in a location that will minimize any inconvenience to the public, and at a minimum of ____ feet away from any part of a structure.
10 ft
What are the 3 overhaul piles we establish during overhaul?
- Salvageable Items (owner to recover)
- Non-Salvageable Items (help owner/insurance assess loss)
- Combustible materials and other removed contents (wet down with foam)
