TB 175 - Post Structure Fire Decon Flashcards
The “___________” initiatives focus on minimizing the exposure of carcinogens to each of our members.
Everyone Goes Home
All LAFD members directly exposed to firefighting operations shall adhere to the Post Structure Fire Decon Procedures which utilize WATER exclusively and is not intended to launder PPE on scene of an incident, but reduce or eliminate any _______ risks.
inhalation
Who shall be responsible for determining the exposure level to members after a structure fire?
-Incident Commander (IC)
Or
-Company Commander
Or
-Incident Safety Officer
Or
-Technical Safety Officer
Members INDIRECTLY exposed to hazardous atmospheres will be EVALUATED to determine the level of Post Structure Fire Decon necessary.
Examples include:
-Medical group
-Rapid Intervention Company (RIC) group
-Exposure Protection assignment
Members assigned to an incident involving Hazardous Materials, Confined Space, and/or Urban Search and Rescue (US&R), shall be guided by the _______ or _______ to determine the level of Post Structure Fire Decon
-Incident Commander
-on-scene subject matter experts
It is known that ________ ventilation assists with improving the environment and EXTENDING the ventilation period has shown a significant impact on improving a SAFER ATMOSPHERE for overhaul.
mechanical
The surrounding environment directly following a fire incident should be considered an IDLH and treated as a hazardous environment.
The duration of ______ and _______ is currently the best line of defense against any dangerous form of gases, vapors and particulates produced from products of combustion.
Time and shielding
Firefighting gear provides protection from products of combustion in what two ways?
-respiratory (SCBA)
-skin absorption (turnouts).
Department issued PPE for structure firefighting (turnouts) has a _____ and _____ barrier to provide shielding which must be maintained properly in order to continually provide protection from exposure.
moisture and vapor
(firefighting hood DOES NOT have a vapor barrier, however, it is recommended to reduce exposure from these toxins and vapors.)
Post Structure Fire Decon Procedures:
Step 1: Light pre-decon rinse to minimize airborne particles. Member STAYS ON “AIR”
Step 2: Doff PPE. After removing FF gloves, DON EMS gloves to minimize skin exposure. Put PPE in trash bag.
Step 3: Use “hero WIPES” to decon EXPOSED SKIN (neck, facial area, ect.)
Step 4: Store bagged PPE in OUTSIDE compartment of apparatus until at quaters.
The use of __________ is recommended in selecting the proper PPE in addition to the completion of exposure reporting.
gas meters to monitor the atmosphere
When shall SCBA, tools and other equipment be wiped down and cleaned?
Prior to return to quarters
The decon of EXPOSED SKIN is an essential safeguard performed to minimize exposure of toxins.
HERO WIPES are available from the Supply and Maintenance Division (S&M) and can be ordered through the Supply Requisition System (SRS).
Hero Wipes are NOT to be used to ________.
wipe down equipment
Upon return to quarters with soiled PPE:
If a member does not have a second set of PPE and does not wish to borrow an off shifter’s PPE, the member shall make arrangements to have their PPE washed when?
The next day
Companies needing showers should change their status to __________ until they have completed showering.
During this time, move-up companies should remain in place or as directed by MFC. Companies that do not have a move-up company assigned shall remain _______ in quarters until this process is complete.
