TB 141 - Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Flashcards
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
The indications for the use of CPAP are:
-adult
-medical (non-trauma) patients in moderate to severe respiratory distress.
While CPAP has been shown to be MOST EFFECTIVE in patients with CHF, it may also help patients with:
-COPD
-victims of near drowning
-patients with severe asthma attacks.
CPAP is contraindicated and shall not be used if any of the following conditions exist:
-Head or facial trauma
-Systolic blood pressure <90
-Age less than 15 years
-Vomiting
-Moderate to severe nosebleed
-ALOC with inability to cooperate or tolerate device or inability to understand and follow directions for use.
-Respiratory or cardiac arrest
-Suspected pneumothorax
-Presence of a tracheostomy
-Inability to maintain patent airway
CPAP may be administered under DHS Reference No. ______, under the M17 Standing Field Treatment Protocol (SFTP - Respiratory Distress), or via base station order.
Ref 806 (Procedures Prior to Base Contact)
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
At no time shall O2 flow rate be set at LESS THAN ____ LPM when CPAP is being applied.
Oxygen flow rates may vary, but must be between ____ LPM and ____ LPM.
-15 LPM
-15 to 25 LPM
O2 Consumption
A standard “D” Cylinder has a runtime of approximately _____ minutes at 15 LPM flow.
20 mins
True or False?
Whenever CPAP is applied to a patient, even if it must be discontinued for any reason, you must document the use of CPAP.
True
All advanced life support field resources (assessment engines, assessment light forces, and paramedic RAs) shall be stocked with CPAP.
The CPAP equipment is packaged to include:
-one Boussignac CPAP device with oxygen tubing
-one medium adult size CPAP mask
-one nebulizer chamber with a T piece connector and oxygen tubing
The CPAP equipment SHALL be placed in the green AIRWAY BAG and SHALL be brought in to the patient’s side on what type of calls?
All ADULT medical calls. (Non-trauma)
If indicated, an albuterol nebulizer may be administered simultaneously using the T piece connector and a second oxygen source.
The oxygen flow rate for the nebulizer shall be ____ LPM.
6 LPM
(Maintain O2 flow of CPAP at 15 LPM)
Once CPAP is applied, it should be discontinued immediately if any of the following occur:
-the patient doesn’t tolerate the CPAP
-patient’s systolic blood pressure falls below 90 mm Hg
-patient’s respiratory status deteriorates and requires assisted ventilation via BVM
-patient develops vomiting that requires suctioning of the airway
