TAXPAYERS
- Portable ladders at taxpayers (Cover all sides of building with a
minimum of 2 portables on the front of the building) - Call for an extra Engine and Truck (when 2 hand lines are
OPERATING on an advanced fire in a store) - Extension to an adjoining store, cockloft or advanced fire in the
cellar (call for 2nd alarm) - Other commercial fires: If fire command station is present
establish ICP there. If there is no FCS or the location of the FCS is
unsuitable, the ICP should be outside of the building close enough
for good communication but far enough away for proper size up. - Heavy or medium fire = initial line should be 2 1/2”
- If 2 1/2” lines are not needed after the initial attack they can be
reduced to 1 3/4”. 1 3/4” can be used in exposures when
compatible with fire conditions. - The 3rd due Engine at a cellar, store or cockloft fire is responsible
to ENSURE the sprinkler is supplied. - Cellar fire (last resort flood the first floor with a TL pipe or stang)
- Cockloft fire (if necessary to operate a line into roof, cease interior
ops OR withdraw personnel to safe area / purpose of roof line is to
protect members on roof and prevent extension into exposures) - Store front windows ( Ladder officer can give permission to vent
for a CELLAR fire) ( STORE AND COCKLOFT FIRES must have
Ladder officer AND IC approval AND a charged line in place) - Aerial ladders normally placed away from front of building to make
room for a TL. (Exception: Fire in a 2 story taxpayer and fire
originated on 2nd floor) - Single most important factor in dealing successfully with taxpayer fires is KNOWLEDGE OF CONSTRUCTION FEATURES.
TAXPAYER: CELLAR FIRE
- Cover ALL sides of building with portable ladders with AT LEAST
2 portables on the front of the building. - For an ADVANCED fire in the cellar call for a 2nd alarm.
- The 3rd due Engine at a cellar fire is responsible to ENSURE the
sprinkler system is supplied. - Cellar pipes and distributors are useful when conditions indicate
their need, as a LAST RESORT flood the 1st floor with a TL pipe or
Stang pipe nozzle.
-Ladder officer can give permission to vent the store front windows
TAXPAYER: COCKLOFT FIRES
- Cover ALL sides of building with portable ladders with AT LEAST
2 portables on the front of the building - If there is extension to the cockloft transmit a 2nd alarm
- The 3rd due Engine is responsible to ENSURE the sprinkler
system is supplied - If necessary to operate a line into a roof opening, all interior
operations must cease OR personnel withdrawn to a safe area.
The primary purpose of a roof line is to protect the personnel on
the roof and protect/prevent extension to the exposures. - Fire in cockloft: breaking storefront windows must be
communicated/coordinated with Ladder Officer AND IC. A
CHARGED line must also be in place.
