Q

BROWNSTONES - ALTERED BUILDINGS

A
  1. Altered buildings

A) If converted to a multiple dwelling, the brownstone will either have
fire escapes OR sprinklers in interior hallways.

B) When converted to rooming house, sprinklers will be extended into
individual rooms.

C) Presence of Sprinklers MAY indicate lack of a fire escape.

D) Most Brownstones DO NOT have a fire escape.

  1. Brownstone duplexes

A) It is common to have one apartment on the first (basement) and
second (parlor) floors and the other apartment on the third and fourth
floors, with each apartment having its own separate entrance.

B) In a Brownstone conversion of this type, where the high stoop
remains in place, access to the lower apartment will usually be the
entrance under the stoop. Ascending the stoop will provide entrance
to the apartment on the upper floors.
