ne Suetonius quidem in tanto discrimine silebat.
Nor, indeed, did Suetonius keep quiet in so great crisis.

Although he trusted (the soldiers’) valour, nevertheless, he combined words of encouragement and prayers that they should despise the noises of the barbarians and their empty threats:

[he said that] there were more women to be seen there than men.

Even in the case of (an army consisting of) many legions, it was few (soldiers) who brought the battle to an end;

Just keeping closely packed, and having thrown their javelins from a distance, they should then continue the massacre and slaughter with their shield bosses and their swords, heedless of plunder:

Such enthusiasm followed the leader’s words, to such an extent had the veteran soldiers, who had much experience of battles, prepared themselves to hurl the javelins, that Suetonius, certain of the outcome, gave the signal for battle.
