Cicero 2 Flashcards
postridie ex Arpinati profecti sumus…
The following day we set out from the estate at Arpinum…
…prandimus in Arcano (nosti hunc fundum).
… we had lunch in Arcanum (you know this farm)
quo ut venimus, humanissime Quintus ‘Pomponia’ inquit, ‘tu invita mulieres, ego vero ascivero pueros.’
When we got there, Quintus said in a most polite manner ‘Pompania, you invite the women (to lunch), but I will summon the slaves in the meantime’.
nihil potuit, mihi quidem ut visum est, dulcius, idque cum verbis tum etiam animo ac vultu.
He could not have (said) anything, as it seemed to me at least, more pleasant, and, that too, not only in his words but also in his attitude and expression.
at illa audientibus nobis ‘ego ipsa sum’ inquit ‘hic hospita’;
… but she said, in our hearing, ‘I’m the hostess here’.
; id autem ex eo, ut opinor, quod antecesserat Statius ut prandium nobis videret.
Now this attitude, in my opinion (arose) from the fact that Statius had gone on ahead to see the meal for us
tum Quintus ‘en’ inquit mihi, ‘haec ego patior cotidie.’
Then Quintus said to me, ‘See! This is what I suffer every day’.
dices ‘quid, quaeso, istuc erat?’
You will say to me ‘‘What prey was there in that’
magnum; itaque me ipsum commoverat;
A great deal; and that had disturbed me as well;
sic absurde et aspere verbis vultuque responderat.
…so irrationally and so sharply had she replied in her words and expression
dissimulavi dolens. discubuimus omnes praeter illam, cui tamen Quintus de mensa misit; illa reiecit.
I hid my feelings, though I deplored (her behaviour). We all reclined at table except for her, for whom Quintus nevertheless sent something from the table; she rejected it
quid multa? nihil meo fratre lenius, nihil asperius tua sorore mihi visum est … ego inde Aquinum.
What more can I say? Nothing seemed to me more gentle than my brother, nothing more savage than your sister … from there I went to Aquinum
Quintus in Arcano remansit et Aquinum ad me postridie mane venit mihique narravit nec secum illam dormire voluisse et cum discessura esset fuisse eius modi qualem ego vidissem
Quintus remained in Arcanum and on the following morning came to me at Arquinum and told me that she had not wanted to sleep with him and that when she was about to depart, she had shown the same behaviour as I myself had seen
