Caesar 5 Flashcards
Caesari omnia uno tempore erant agenda:
Everything had to be done at the same time by Caesar:
vexillum proponendum, quod erat insigne, cum ad arma concurri oporteret;
The standard had to be displayed, which was the signal when (the soldiers) had to rush together to arms;
signum tuba dandum
the signal had to be given on the trumpet;
ab opere revocandi milites;
the soldiers had to be recalled from (their) work;
qui paulo longius aggeris petendi causa processerant arcessendi;
(those) who had gone out a little further to seek materials for a rampart had to be summoned;
acies instruenda; milites cohortandi; signum dandum.
the battle line had to be drawn up; soldiers had to be encouraged; the signal for battle had to be given.
Quarum rerum magnam partem temporis brevitas et incursus hostium impediebat.
A great part of these actions was hindered by the shortage of time and the enemy attack.
His difficultatibus duae res erant subsidio, scientia atque usus militum,
Two factors relieved these difficulties, the skill and experience of the soldiers,
…quod superioribus proeliis exercitati quid fieri oporteret non minus commode ipsi sibi praescribere quam ab aliis doceri poterant
…because, trained in previous battles, they were able to determine for themselves what should be done, just as easily as to be instructed by others,
…et quod ab opere singulisque legionibus singulos legatos Caesar discedere nisi munitis castris vetuerat.
…and because Caesar had forbidden each (and every) commander to leave the works and their respective legions unless the camp was fortified.
Hi propter propinquitatem et celeritatem hostium nihil iam Caesaris imperium expectabant,
The commanders, because of the proximity and speed of the enemy, did not wait at all now for Caesar’s command,
…sed per se quae videbantur administrabant.
…but performed on their own initiative what seemed right to them
