Caesar 4 Flashcards
venit magnis itineribus in Nerviorum fines.
(Caesar) came into the territory of the Nervii by means of forced marches.
ibi ex captivis cognoscit quae apud Ciceronem gerantur, quantoque in periculo res sit.
There he found out from prisoners what was going on in Cicero’s camp, and in what great danger the state of affairs was.
tum cuidam ex equitibus Gallis magnis praemiis persuadet uti ad Ciceronem epistolam deferat.
Then he persuaded one of the Gallic horsemen with great rewards to take a letter to Cicero.
hanc Graecis conscriptam litteris mittit, ne intercepta epistola nostra ab hostibu consilia cognoscantur.
He sent this (letter) written in Greek characters, to prevent our plans being discovered by the enemy if the letter was intercepted.
si adire non possit, monet ut tragulam cum epistola ad ammentum deligata intra munitionem castrorum abiciat.
If (the Gaul) could not approach (Cicero’s camp), Caesar advised that he should throw a spear inside the fortification of the camp with the letter tied to the strap.
in litteris scribit se cum legionibus profectum celeriter adfore; hortatur ut pristinam virtutem retineat.
In the letter, he wrote that he had set out with the legions and would be there quickly; he urged Cicero to maintain his former courage.
Gallus periculum veritus, ut erat praeceptum, tragulam mittit.
The Gaul fearing danger, threw the spear in accordance with instructions.
haec casu ad turrim adhaesit, neque ab nostris biduo animadversa tertio die a quodam milite conspicitur, dempta ad Ciceronem defertur.
By chance, this struck to a tower and, unnoticed by our men for two days, was seen by a certain soldier on the third day, taken down and taken to Cicero.
ille perlectam in conventu militum recitat, maximaque omnes laetitia adficit.
When Cicero had perused (the letter), he read it out in an assembly of the soldiers and filled everyone with the utmost joy.
tum fumi incendiorum procul videbantur, quae res omnem dubitationem adventus legionum expulit.
Then, the smokes of fires was seen at a distance, which event removed all doubt about the arrival of the legions.
